I grew up in Holland and the Dutch East Indies (we call it Indonesia now) and graduated from a maritime college with the urge to travel the seven seas and visit all continents before the world shrank to its present size. After doing this for several years I came to the discovery that I liked growing plants above all else. At the time the Dutch government was still paying its surplus farmers and citizens to emigrate to Australia, Canada, and the US so I grabbed the opportunity and came to California to study forestry. After spending some time at San Diego and San Francisco City Colleges, I enrolled in the School of Forestry at U.C. Berkeley where I earned my second B.S. degree.
The two Harolds (Biswell and Heady) at Berkeley got me interested in range and wildland management. After doing some study and research at the University of Michigan and at Colorado State, I returned to Berkeley to earn my Ph.D. in Wildland and Range Science. Both before and after coming to CSU Chico in 1976, I worked as a range consultant for the US Forest Service (Berkeley), the Soil Conservation Service (Susanville), the Bureau of Land Management (Cedarville), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Libya).
COURSES TAUGHT:
During the past 25 years I have taught a great variety of range, natural resource, and wildland subjects ranging from forestry and forages to wildlife and wetlands. My current courses include:
Agricultural Ecology
Wildland Vegetation Ecology
Grasses and Grasslands of the Western US
Vegetation Dynamics and Management
Wildland Inventory and Analysis
Landscape Ecology
RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS:
My research interests deal with the dynamics and management of California's grasslands and woodlands, while my recreational and professional interests deal with riparian restoration and land stewardship. To this end, students and I have worked on projects for the Bureau of Land Management, the California Wildlife Conservation Board, The Nature Conservancy, Dye Creek Cattle Company, Caltrans, and the US Bureau of Reclamation. Last year I was reappointed by the Secretary of the Interior to serve on the Bureau of Land Management's Susanville Resource Advisory Council for a 3-year term.
