Swine Unit

Welcome to the ARTC Swine Unit! The Swine Unit strives to support the educational mission of the College of Agriculture by providing a uniform herd of breeding seedstock in a clean environment, for the purposes of teaching, research and outreach.

The Herd:

  • 35 Registered Yorkshire sows consisting entirely of genetics imported directly from Lorenzen Farms in Chrisman, Illinois.
  • Goal is to maintain 35 sows that will produce two litters every year and consistently provide animals for educational and research-oriented purposes.
  • February through May farrowings will be primarily terminal with the project pig market as the central target.
  • Remaining offspring will be produced to supply purebred replacement animals to an expanding market.

 Security:

  • High health program maintained to ensure viability.
  • Biosecure area signs posted on all doors.
  • Visitors by appointment only.
  • Disinfectant pads for all foot traffic.
