Star Student Keith Landaiche, an agriculture major with emphasis in integrated plant systems, has been selected as a Spring 2001 Star Student for the California State University, Chico College of Agriculture for his outstanding writing skills. A junior who transferred from Butte College in

fall 2000, Landaiche was the recent recipient of the AS. Bookstore 2000-2001 Academic Writing Award for his paper “The Zoot-Suit Riots.” Landaiche’s piece, written for Social Science 102, Temporal Concepts, details the historical background and cultural context that led to the 1943 riot between the zoot-suited pachucos and sailors stationed in the area. Hoping to continue his academic work at University of California, Davis, Landaiche said his professional goals include working in crop protection and integrated pest management in California or in another tropical area. Landaiche’s ultimate goal, he said, is to reduce pesticide input in agriculture. Born in Louisiana, Landaiche was raised in Venezuela and spent several years in British Colombia. He has dual American and Canadian citizenship. With a goal of imparting knowledge of integrated agriculture and environmental systems to students, industry and society, the Chico State College of Agriculture advocates the idea that today decides tomorrow. Offering two bachelor of science degrees—one in agriculture and the other in agricultural business—the college offers specialized subject areas in agriscience and education, animal and plant systems, wild-range science, agricultural marketing, agricultural finance and appraisal, and agricultural business management.
