The Paul L. Byrne Memorial Agricultural Teaching and Research Center (University Farm) is the centerpiece of our efforts to provide our students with a high quality learning environment. The property is an 800 acre farm about 6 miles south of campus which supports a diversified farming operation that includes livestock, meat processing, permanent crops and annual crops. In addition to the production units, the University Farm has classroom space, a special events pavilion, and various farm support facilities. A secondary property, the Meridian Range is 250 acres of rangeland about 10 miles north of campus which is used for grazing livestock and to support range related courses.
Management of the University Farm strives toward sustainable resource utilization to ensure high-quality production from a healthy environment. The faculty, staff and students take pride in their efforts to maintain the University Farm as a model of good stewardship, a showcase of environmentally-sound technology, and a community asset where people can come for training and inspiration.
The faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture have endeavored to improve the integration of the University Farm with the instructional program and to enhance the experiential education possible with this type of resource. Students are provided an opportunity to put their education to work by managing a wide range of livestock and crop production systems. Work experience is also available in the administrative office, the meats lab, and equipment maintenance shop.
Relative to the size of our program, we have what is arguably the best supported University Farm in the western United States. The commitment of the faculty and staff to gain the maximum instructional benefit from the University Farm is unmatched.
