The College of Agriculture is making a difference in our community in a number of ways.
First, our field day activities that are directed toward the youth provide an opportunity for young people in Northern California to become involved in activities that help build life skills. The College of Agriculture provides the young people involved in 4-H and FFA a venue to direct their energies in a positive manner.
Through the CSU Agricultural Research Initiative (ARI) and selected partnerships, the faculty of the College of Agriculture has been involved in a number of applied research projects that have direct benefit to our communities. Examples include:
Looking for alternatives to the burning of rice straw has provided the rice industry with tools to improve air quality.
Collaborative research into improving on-site waste management has improved land use planning in rural communities.
Research into managing food processing waste has pointed toward sustainable practices that will lead to improved water quality.
Best management practices in using riparian buffer strips to improve water quality are being developed.
